In this item discussing the Cadbury chocolate manufacturer being bought by American business (and so profits will now go to the USA), we find out an interesting bit of information.

New Labour removed the “public interest” clause from corporate takeover law. Now that explains why so many UK companies are owned by foreign businesses or governments in the 2000’s, compared to the Conservatives time in office in the 1980’s/90’s. The government is now powerless to stop UK businesses being bought up, in contrast to the USA, Japan, Germany France etc. that have such a clause to protect their core businesses.
