AA in Business Marketing or Culinary Arts?

I’m planning on a return to school. I’d like to get into the foodservice/ restaurant industry. The culinary arts program I’m looking at doesn’t seem to look at the business side. Would a marketing degree be a better way to go. Saddleback College has a good business dept, but I think I need to take my lumps in the kitchen to excel in the industry? Thoughts

You should look at other programs to see if they have a culinary program that has a business side.
If you have to pick take a marketing degree more options in case you want to change jobs.

good luck.

Is a major in Liberal Art better then Business Marketing?

I am student majoring in business marketing and would like to seek professional advice to help me decide on what is the best major to obtain. I enjoy marketing but at the same time I would like to be marketable after I graduate from college. I would appreciate your advice, thank you.

Well…..as far as I know, a liberal arts degree, would make you less marketable. I am a teacher and that is what most of my fellow teachers had majored in, not sure what else you can really do with a liberal arts degree to be honest. I would stick with the business major, you could then go back and get your MBA (that was my original plan, didn’t follow through on that one though…) and make a good living.

Are there any good entry level jobs for somebody with a marketing or business admin degree?

I’ve been contemplating either getting a degree in Business Marketing (2 years) or Business Admin (4 years), but I’ve been wondering how are the entry level jobs for both? Which degree would suit me better etc.?

First of all, if you are going to bother getting a degree, go for the 4 year degree. An associates really isn’t going to get you anything except questions on interviews asking why you didn’t go for the bachelors.

Second, entry level job basically means you are going to be working your butt off doing more than you are paid for because companies know they can pay you less because you have no experience and are new to the work force. I am not saying this is bad. In fact, it is completely normal. Just don’t expect to get a job paying much more than 30-35K your first year out of college. Everyone has to work their way up. Be prepared to be someones gopher for about a year or more until you are qualified for the higher paying and "good" job. This is a part of life, basically no way of getting around it. But if you stick it out and have a good attitude and do a great job, you will be golden for the rest of your career! Good luck

What are (unique) jobs with a Business/Marketing degree?

I am thinking about majoring in Business with a concentration on marketing. What kind of jobs are there (and details of the jobs)? Are there any kind of unique/different jobs with this degree? Does it only deal with math?

There are different sectors of marketing with different skills required.

Math & Analytical:
Marketing Research – studies demographics and researches information that will likely change the target audience of the product

Creative Side:
Branding & Product Management – deals with managing the product packaging and design, testing, and placement, all based on the research that was presented

Advertising – deals with promoting the products into the media and onto the streets, into the people’s minds, once again based on the research findings

Sales:
Sales – the basic marketing of presenting the product on an individual level, usually paid by commission

Now, the larger the company, the more specialized employees will be. A huge corporation will have entire research team and a separate ad team, but smaller companies will have people that are knowledgeable in all the areas. Advertising agencies also hire marketing majors with great creativity.

If you like english, math, psychology, statistics, and creativity, or a combination of a few of these, you’re in the right field! Most marketing programs allow you to choose from a pool of classes so you can refine your skills in a specific area and go for jobs related to it.

I want to work in advertising. Which major is better for this, Business/Marketing or Communications?

I’m a college freshman and my declared major is currently Business/Marketing, however I’m not crazy about a lot of the business classes I have to take and I talked to my advisor who told me that might be a sign that I should change my major. But a friend told me today that he knows someone who graduated with a communications degree to go into advertising but preference was sometimes given to business/marketing people. So is communications as good as B/M?

Advertising has 2 sides:

the business side of it does client management, account planning, research, media (although a diff department) etc.

the creative side does art direction, creatives, retouching, digital imaging etc

First explore some of the ad agencies and decide what side you like. Then look at what kind of positions are listed at those agencies….target one of those positions…this will help you narrow down your choices.

Mind you: Ad agencies do not pay well innitially…but once u r hooked and enjoy the work…you will love it! Also, most agencies don’t hire creatives that frequently…but jobs on management side are immense. To succeed on creative…start building your portfolio!
